The Golden Mototi

Under the flicker of your snooted strobe on a bonfire dive in Anilao, a tiny golden voyager emerged from the inky depths. At first glance, you thought it was a commonplace juvenile octopus—until a single azure ring bloomed on its mantle, a neon warning etched in living paint. This is no ordinary cephalopod but the elusive mototi octopus, cousin to the famed blue-ring, flaunting its rare beauty in a heartbeat-sized spectacle.

It drifted like liquid gold, each chromatophore shimmering with molten warmth, tentacles curling in a graceful ballet. Then, as if sensing your awe, it paused, its eye reflecting the strobe’s glow, the blue ring pulsing an ancient signal: “Beware.” In that suspended moment, you held the ocean’s secret in your frame—a fleeting portrait of rarity, danger, and wonder.

The Tiny Night Dancer

Beneath the ink-black canopy of an Anilao night, a hidden world awakens—where light is precious and every spark of color tells a story. On a moonless dive, you hover at the water’s surface, heart racing, when a thumbnail-sized traveler drifts into view. Lit by a narrow beam, its translucent skin glows with molten ambers, each chromatophore flickering like distant stars. In a perfect pirouette, it floats upside-down, sending its brilliant reflection dancing across the mirror-calm surface.

This juvenile octopus—no larger than your thumbnail—transforms the abyss into a stage. Its delicate tentacles curl and unfurl, each movement a silent invitation to wonder. Caught in that fleeting moment, you realize you’re witnessing a private performance: the first and only portrait of its kind in this enchanted hour.

The Quiet Majesty

On a calm morning dive at the Cathedral site on South Africa’s Alliwal Shoal—around 26 meters down—you drift into an underwater basilica of stone and light, camera at the ready. Your subject: the ragged-tooth shark (Carcharias taurus), also known as the sand tiger shark.

A mottled adult glides into view, its bulky frame hovering effortlessly among the sunlit columns. Unlike most sharks, ragged-tooth sharks gulp air at the surface and store it in their stomachs, turning their bodies into living blimps that can suspend motionless in the water. Around this apex predator, a swirling school of striped grunt (Pomadasys striatus) parts and reforms, as if paying homage to their silent guardian.

There’s no menace here—just a creature as calm as the waters it patrols, its teeth bared in an unthreatening grin, eyes reflecting the cathedral’s glow. As you hover fin-to-fin, you feel a profound respect for their quiet power and the timeless dance of predator and prey beneath these ancient arches.

The Pontohi’s Pink Refuge

In Raja Ampat's azure depths, 27 meters beneath Kri Island's sunlit waters, your strobes revealed nature's miniature masterpiece. There, perfectly camouflaged against a blush-pink sponge, clung a Pontohi pygmy seahorse—barely 1.7 cm of exquisite evolutionary artistry.

As your air gauge approached deco limits, this tiny sea fairy paused in its gentle sway, allowing your lens to capture what few eyes ever witness. Its curved neck and delicate coronet emerged in soft detail—a fleeting glimpse into a secret world where nature crafts its most intricate wonders.
