On a calm morning dive at the Cathedral site on South Africa’s Alliwal Shoal—around 26 meters down—you drift into an underwater basilica of stone and light, camera at the ready. Your subject: the ragged-tooth shark (Carcharias taurus), also known as the sand tiger shark.
A mottled adult glides into view, its bulky frame hovering effortlessly among the sunlit columns. Unlike most sharks, ragged-tooth sharks gulp air at the surface and store it in their stomachs, turning their bodies into living blimps that can suspend motionless in the water.
