Core Setup
- Camera Body: Mirrorless or DSLR (full-frame or APS-C) with fast autofocus and solid low-light performance
- Housing: Rugged aluminum or polycarbonate housing with full manual control and vacuum sealing system
Lens and Port:
- Recommended: 8-15mm fishey lense, 16–35 mm or 15–35 mm wide-angle zooms; Tokina 10–17 mm for APS-C
- Use with a 6–8” dome port for decent corner sharpness and wide coverage
- This classic configuration balances quality, reliability, and travel practicality.
Lighting
- Strobes: Dual strobes (e.g., Sea&Sea YSD3, Retra Pro, Scubalamp Supe) are helpful for backlit or deeper shark encounters
- Video Lights: 10,000–15,000 lumens for ambient fill or hybrid photo/video work (Kraken, BigBlue, Scubalamp, Keldan)
Advanced Optics (Optional)
Photographers looking for pro-level sharpness and field of view can consider:
- Nauticam FCP (Fisheye Conversion Port): Ultra-wide 170° fisheye rendering with excellent optical quality in a compact format
- Nauticam WACP Series: Rectilinear converters offering low distortion and top-tier edge sharpness with compatible zoom lenses
These tools are designed for experienced photographers but not essential to get great results on this trip.
Compact, Action & GoPro Cameras
You don't need a full-frame rig to enjoy or document this experience. Compact cameras, GoPros, and action cameras are absolutely welcome and capable of producing beautiful results.
- GoPro users should use a red filter or video light to maintain color at depth
- Compact cameras (like the Sony RX100 or Olympus TG series) in wide-angle mode can perform well with ambient light
- Mounts, trays, or handles are recommended for stability, and a lanyard or clip system is essential in case of strong current
Whether you're shooting RAW files or recording smooth 4K video, the key is knowing your setup and being ready when the action happens.
